Surgical orthodontics
Sometimes braces alone can’t help you achieve the smile you’re looking for. If you need to change the position of your jaws, and your jaw bones have stopped growing, then orthognathic surgery may be the best option for an aesthetic and functional smile.

What is orthognathic surgery?
Orthognathic surgery is another name for jaw surgery. It is performed by a maxillofacial surgeon in conjunction with orthodontic treatment. Orthognathic surgery can correct irregularities in your jaws and facial bones, and improve your overall facial appearance.
Do I need orthognathic surgery?
If you are an adult whose jaw position is causing issues with confidence, chewing, speaking, or sleeping then jaw surgery may be a good option for you. Jaw surgery is also great for correcting severe overbites, underbites, and open bites.
When you visit us for your free consultation, Dr. Junyi can determine if you are a candidate for orthognathic surgery, or if your smile can be corrected with braces or aligners alone.

Do I have to use braces with jaw surgery?
At KIND SMILES, we may be able to treat you with braces or clear aligners, but you WILL need orthodontic treatment before you undergo surgery. When the shape of your jaws change, the relation of your teeth will change too, and we need to make sure your smile will work for you.

How long is the recovery from orthognathic surgery?
Most patients fully recover from jaw surgery in 4-8 weeks, and you should be able to return to fairly normal activity within two weeks. Once you’ve fully recovered, we will fine-tune your smile before removing your orthodontic appliance.
