How do braces work?
Fixed braces work using a series of brackets, metal archwires, and small elastics. We will affix a bracket to the front of each of your teeth and run the archwire through them. The elastics are what hold it all in place.
You will visit our office in Irvine for regularly scheduled brace adjustment appointments over the course of treatment. Dr. Junyi will make small adjustments to your archwires, so that gentle pressure is applied to targeted areas. This will slowly move your teeth into alignment!
Types of braces we offer in irvine
- Metal braces: Metal braces are the traditional orthodontic treatment. They are great for all ages, and you can customize the color of your elastics to make treatment more fun!
- Clear braces: Clear braces provide an aesthetic finish for your traditional treatment. Made from tooth-colored ceramic, clear braces help your treatment blend in naturally with your smile.
- Invisible braces: Invisible braces, also known as Invisalign® clear aligners, don’t use the traditional bracket system. Instead, they shape your smile with barely-there custom trays for a truly discreet treatment.
Braces for Kids in Irvine, CA
Most kids in Irvine do not need braces the moment their first adult teeth come in — but they do need someone watching. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic check-up by age 7, and that visit is usually about timing, not treatment. By 7 the permanent molars and front teeth have started to come in, which is enough for us to see how the bite is developing, whether the jaw has room for the teeth still on their way, and whether waiting is safer than starting.
When Should My Child See an Orthodontist?
Bring your child in by age 7, or sooner if you notice crowding, a crossbite, thumb-sucking past age 5, mouth breathing, difficulty chewing, or teeth that came in much earlier or later than their siblings’. Most children we see at 7 leave with a “check back in a year” plan. That is a good outcome — it means we have a baseline and will catch a problem early instead of managing it late.
Early (Phase 1) Treatment
Phase 1 treatment happens while your child still has a mix of baby and adult teeth, usually between ages 7 and 10. It is not a full set of braces on every tooth. It is a short, targeted step — an expander to widen a narrow upper jaw, partial braces to guide a few teeth, or a space maintainer to hold room for a tooth that has not arrived yet. The goal is to make the second phase shorter and simpler, and in some cases to avoid extractions or surgery later.
Kid-Friendly Braces Options in Irvine
Traditional metal braces are still the workhorse for growing patients: they handle the widest range of bite problems and they are the most affordable. Kids pick their own colored elastics at each visit, which turns an appointment into something they look forward to. Ceramic braces blend in for older kids who are self-conscious. For the right patient, clear aligners are an option — but they only work if they are worn 20-22 hours a day, so we are honest with families about whether that is realistic for their child.
Parent Questions
How long will my child be in braces? Most kids finish in 18 to 24 months. Phase 1 treatment is usually 6 to 12 months.
Does it hurt? The first few days after placement and after each adjustment feel sore, not painful. Soft foods and over-the-counter pain relief handle it.
Can my child still play sports and instruments? Yes. We fit a mouthguard for contact sports, and wind players adjust within a couple of weeks.
What does it cost? Cost depends on the length and complexity of treatment. We give you the full number and monthly payment options at the free consultation — no surprises partway through.
